Pure Blood - 3

4:08 A.M. August 11, 2087 - Lady Gaga Memorial Hospital

Eric: Breyden are you okay?

Breyden and Eric sat in the waiting room of the Lady Gaga Memorial Hospital after Breyden had detailed what had happened to his friend.

Breyden: My sister was attacked by one of those... Things! Do you think I’m okay?
Eric: Sorry... I’m just trying to help.
Breyden: Well it would help if you would just be quiet.

...

Breyden: Sorry, I’m just on edge.
Eric: I get it, sorry.

Eric grabbed the TV remote for the waiting room.

Breyden turns off the TV.

Breyden: I don’t want to listen to that.
Eric: Sorry.

The doctor who had taken Sarah back into the surgery ward appeared before them.

Doctor: Sarah is going to be alright. She’s taken massive damage and will need a months of recovery, but it’s looking as if she’ll pull through.
Breyden: T-Thank you.
Doctor: What exactly happened, again?
Breyden: Please, I don’t want to talk about it.
Doctor: Understandable. You can come see her if you want. The police will be wanting your account of the accident afterwards.

Breyden got up from his chair immediately and followed the doctor. Eric stayed behind.

Walking into the room all he could think about was the face of the attacker, how it was able to just disappear like that.

Breyden: It’s going to be okay Sarah... It’ll be okay...

Breyden wiped tears from his eyes as he grabbed his sister’s hand.

The TV that was located in Sarah’s room was on.

News reporter: This just in, a witness's description of the masked attackers of the local Mercy Hospital...

Breyden looked over at the TV to see the exact face of the creature that had attacked his sister in her room.

Breyden: It can’t be...
News reporter: This attack during Mercy’s annual blood drive has certainly shaken the community. This reporter hopes that nothing of the same happens any time soon.

Breyden turned the TV off and rushes out of his sister’s room and over to Eric in the waiting room.

Breyden: We need to go back to my house.
Eric: But don’t you want to tell the police what happened?
Breyden: It can wait for now, we need to get over there.

The two rushed outside.

Eric: Wait... We came here in the ambulance. My car is back at Mercy.
Breyden: Damn it.

Breyden got on his phone and called a taxi to take them back home.

10:35 A.M. August, 11, 2087 - A small town in southern Ohio.

After five hours of long traffic and a yelling taxi driver, Breyden and Eric were back home.

Eric: Are you sure we should have just left like that? We both probably need sleep and you’re all shaken up over this.
Breyden: No. We had to go home.
Eric: ... Okay.

Breyden rushed inside and crouched down to look at the fallen vase. There was blood near it.

Eric: Do you think that person used it to attack Sarah?
Breyden: I think it might be the reason the “thing” attacked Sarah.
Eric: Huh?
Breyden: That “thing” was the same “thing” that a witness of the Mercy attack saw. Mercy was having a blood drive. Those things are after blood.
Eric: Even if that kind of makes sense, you can’t be sure. It’s probably just terrorists or something.
Breyden: Terrorists? That makes even less sense! Terrorists can’t disappear into nothing!

...

Eric: I think maybe both of us just need to sleep. A lot has happened.
Breyden: We can’t sleep with these things everywhere! They could come back here!
Eric: If you’re that worried you can come over to my house to sleep.
Breyden: Fine. But only for a little while, we have to get back to Sarah.

Breyden and Eric drove Sarah’s car over to Eric’s house and stayed there for the night.

9 P.M. August 11, 2087 - Lady Gaga Memorial Hospital

Breyden and Eric walked into the hospital and up to the receptionist.

Receptionist: May I help you two?
Breyden: May we go up to Sarah Holt’s room? I’m her brother.
Receptionist: Of course, dears.
Breyden: Thank you.

The receptionist smiled as Breyden and Eric walked past and up into the elevator.

A man stood in the elevator next to the two.

Man: Hello, boys.
Breyden & Eric: Hey.
Man: Here to see family?
Breyden: I am, he’s with me.
Man: Oh, sorry to hear you have family in the hospital. Allow me to introduce myself, I’m James.
Breyden: I’m Breyden and this is Eric.
James: Nice to meet you, Breyden and Eric.

The elevator stopped on Sarah’s floor and the three got out.

James: I guess I’ll be seeing you two.
Breyden & Eric: See you.

The two walked away from James and into Sarah’s room.

Sarah’s doctor was there running tests.

Doctor: Oh, welcome back. Where did you two have to run to this morning?
Breyden: We had to go home and check on our dogs.
Breyden: That was a good cover-up. Proud of myself.
Doctor: Oh, okay then. Would you like me to call the police up so you ma-

A scream came from the hallway.

Eric, Breyden, and the doctor turned to see a woman being overpowered onto the ground by a creature in a mask.

Woman: SOMEONE HELP ME!

The man who Breyden and Eric had met in the elevator earlier, James, came charging at the creature, knocking it off the woman.

Eric and Breyden rushed over to help the woman.

Breyden: Are you alright?!
Woman: I-I think so. The man that saved me, where is he?

The three looked in the direction of where James had tackled the monster to see it now overpowering and ripping James apart. Blood was going everywhere.

The sound of many footsteps coming up the stairs started to become louder.

Breyden: Terrorists, Eric?!
Eric: Let’s just get the hell out of here!

Eric and Breyden lifted up the woman and got inside of the elevator that was now packed with people screaming and crying.

The elevator went down to the base floor and the crowd of people got out to see at least four of the masked creatures devastating everything. Everyone began running toward the doors of the building.

Eric: Breyden! What about Sarah!?

Breyden stopped in his tracks as the masked-ones started stumbling over to the group of people running toward the doors.

Breyden: Take her. I’m going back up to Sarah.
Eric: But...
Breyden: JUST GO!

Breyden ran back to the elevator and got it closed just before any of the masked-ones could get in as well.

As soon as the doors opened on Sarah’s floor Breyden sprinted straight to her room, but she was gone.

Breyden: Where...

SCREEEEECCHH.

Breyden looked around to see two of the masked-ones facing him. There was no where to run. He looked around and grabbed the needles sitting on the tray next to him and began throwing them at the now charging masked-ones. A few of the needles hit, but it didn’t slow them enough for him to get to the elevator safely.

Looking around again Breyden saw a bag of blood hooked up to the IV his sister would have had in. He grabbed the bag, slit it open with a leftover needle, and tossed it at the two masked-ones. They immediately stopped and began tearing each other apart. Breyden took this opportunity to run down the stairs and out the door of the hospital.

A large crowd of people were outside and police cars were showing up. Breyden went over to where Eric and the woman they had rescued were sitting.

Eric: Where is Sarah?!
Breyden: I don’t know. She’s not there. She’s just not there.
Eric: What the hell is going on. What the hell. What the hell...
Woman: I think maybe it would be a good idea to get away from the very evident large crowd of crazy people attacking the hospital!
Eric: O-Okay...
Breyden: Where could she... be...

The three got into the car and drove away from the hospital. Out the windows they saw multiple buildings on fire and others that seemed to have been broken into.

Breyden: What in the world is happening...
Woman: I don’t know, but I still think we just need to get the hell out of here!
Eric: What’s your name anyway?
Woman: My name is Ave, Ave Walsh.

Breyden averted his eyes from the TV screen and shoved his face into the warm and cozy pillow laying on his bed.

Sarah: Breyden you need to get up! You’re going to be late for work!

Sarah stood at the door of the bedroom where Breyden was sleeping.

Breyden: Oh shut up Sarah I’m not going in today. I feel awful.
Sarah: Whatever, you’re just asking to be fired. This is the sixth time this month!
Breyden: Yeah well maybe I have cancer.
Sarah: Haha, you know they eradicated it years ago.
Breyden: Just leave me alone!
Sarah: Fine, but just think about how mom would feel if she knew her son was going to become a great disappointment to our entire family by losing his prestigious job.
Breyden: ... I work at Wal-Mart and mom is dead.
Sarah: That’s the point.

Sarah walked away and out the door, slamming it shut on her way out.

Beeeep. Beeeeeeeeeep. Beeeeep.

Breyden: Ugh.

Breyden reached for his phone on the bed-side table and answered the call.

Eric: Hey man get up you’re late for work.
Breyden: Fine, but don’t let my sister find out, I don’t want her to have the satisfaction of thinking I actually listened to her for once.
Eric: Mmk, do you need a ride? I can come over there real quick.
Breyden: Nah I can walk there, need the exercise.
Eric: Okay, see you soon.
Breyden: See you.

6:00 P.M. August 10, 2087 - A small town in southern Ohio.

Breyden opened the door to his home and walked in after an exciting day of cashiering at Wal-Mart.

Breyden: Sarah! Are you home?

...

No response.

Breyden: Good that means she didn’t catch me actually leaving for work.

Breyden looked around the house and saw that a vase had been tipped over onto the floor and broken.

Breyden: The hell?
Breyden: Sarah?

A crashing sound came from the other end of the house.

Breyden: Sarah are you back there?

Breyden flipped the light switch, but the lights did not turn on.

Breyden: Hello?

Crash.

Breyden ran down to the end of the house using his phone as a flashlight. Heavy breathing sounds were coming from his sister’s room.

Breyden: S...Sarah?

Two figures lay on Sarah’s bed. Breyden flashed his phone’s light on the two to see Sarah’s lifeless and torn-open body being ravaged by a strange creature with a mask.

Masked-one: SCREEEECCHHHH
Breyden: Get the hell away from her!

Both Breyden and the creature ran toward each other. As soon as they were about to hit the creature disappeared into nothing in front of Breyden and he ran straight into the wall. Struggling up from the fall he walked toward his sister’s bed.

Sarah: B...Breyd-den?
Breyden: Don’t worry, I-I’ll get you help. Don’t worry.

Breyden began crying over his sister’s pale and bloody body and grabbed her hand.. Taking out his phone he dialed 911 and called an ambulance to the area. Afterwards he called Eric, still crying and holding his sister’s hand.

Breyden: E-Eric? Is that you?
Eric: What’s wrong?!
Breyden: S-Sarah. S-She was attacked. I don’t... She... An ambulance is coming. P-please come over her.
Eric: I’m on my way, hold on.

Eric and the ambulance arrived the same time to Breyden’s home. Sarah was loaded into the back and driven off to the hospital while Eric and Breyden drove behind.

As the ambulance reached the hospital it began to slow and come to a downright stop. Breyden and Eric stopped behind and got out of the car staring at the hospital in terror.

Breyden: Holy...

The sign that usually said “Mercy Hospital” now only had the “Mercy.” Half of the sign had turned to ash along with half of the hospital, and the other half was going quick.

EMT: What the hell is happening?!

The EMT who had been driving the ambulance asked a screaming doctor as they ran from the hospital.

Doctor: THOSE THINGS! THEY’RE TAKING EVERYTHING! BURNING THE HOSPITAL TO THE GROUND!

The doctor fell to the ground as a now visible bite to the back of his head started gushing blood.

In a panic the EMT got back into the ambulance along with Breyden and Eric and drove off as fast as possible to the next closest hospital.

???: You disgust me.

October 12, 2087 - A small town in southern Ohio.

Breyden: Rebecca come over here.
Rebecca: Jesus, fine. I don’t understand why you have to have me so close to you guys.
Eric: It’s so that we don’t lose you, now keep quiet they’re coming.

Everyone in the group fell silent as the trio of masked-ones sprinted past the dark corner of the abandoned Wal-Mart the group was hiding in.

Breyden: For God sakes Rebecca they would have seen you.
Rebecca: Calm the hell down I can take care of myself, I don’t need you three here babysitting me just to stay alive anymore. If you haven’t noticed there are a lot less of “them” coming around.
Ave: Just shush it and follow us, kid, we don’t need you dying on us. Too much of a set-back.
Rebecca: I swear if you call me a kid one more time.

Rebecca grabbed an old blu-ray player off of a nearby shelf and held it up as if she were about to use it as a weapon.

Ave: ... Kid.

Rebecca swung the player and just narrowly missed Ave’s head as Eric shoved her back into the shelf making the entire thing fall onto the ground.

Breyden: Oh damn...

The staggering footsteps of the masked-ones that had passed the group earlier had now started becoming louder instead of quieter.

Breyden: Move it! They’re coming back!

Almost everyone started running in the opposite direction of the footsteps.

Ave: Great job, Kid, can’t believe you let that happen.

...

Ave: Kid?

Eric, Ave, and Breyden turned back to see Rebecca laying face-down on the ground, not two feet away from where the shelf fell over.

Breyden: REBECCA! GET UP!

Blood started to appear in a pool around Rebecca’s head. The smell of pure human blood in the air made the footsteps of the masked-ones much more quick toward the group.

Ave began running back to Rebecca’s lifeless body but was grabbed by both Eric and Breyden.

Eric: Ave, there’s nothing we can do. Rebecca would have wanted us to get out of here safely and that can’t happen if we go back to her. We have to hurry or they’ll catch up to us!
Ave: But it’s my fault! I can’t let her die like this!

Ave began sobbing, but turned around as she was instructed.

Breyden: Come on guys...

The now group of three ran in the opposite direction of their fallen friend as the trio of masked-ones stopped in the presence of the precious substance that would keep them from their own demise, pure blood.
